How to Compress a Video on iPhone (4 Free Ways)

iPhone has no compress button, but you can still shrink a video for free: iMovie, Shortcuts, camera settings, or a browser tool that hits an exact size.

To compress a video on iPhone, export it at a lower resolution. iPhone has no compress button, so use one of four free routes: iMovie's export options, a Shortcuts automation, lower camera settings for future clips, or a browser tool like the MobileStudio Video Compressor when you need an exact size such as 25 MB.

The short answer

MethodBest forExact size?
MobileStudio Video Compressor in SafariHitting a limit like 20 or 25 MBYes
iMovie, Share, OptionsA quick lower-resolution copyNo
Shortcuts, Encode MediaCompressing several videos in one goNo
Settings, Camera, Record VideoSmaller files from now onNo

Why are iPhone videos so big?

iPhone records at high quality by default. A minute of 1080p video at 30 fps is about 60 MB, and 4K at 60 fps is about 400 MB, according to the estimates in Settings > Camera > Record Video. That's great for watching on a TV, but too big for email or chat apps. For the full explanation, see how to compress a video.

How do I compress a video on iPhone to an exact size?

Use a tool that targets a size instead of guessing with resolution:

  1. Open the MobileStudio Video Compressor in Safari.
  2. Tap the drop area and pick the video from your Photos library.
  3. Choose 10 MB, 20 MB (Discord), 25 MB (email), or type a custom size.
  4. Leave Resolution on Auto and tap Compress.
  5. Tap Download MP4 and save it to Files or Photos.

The video is processed on your iPhone and never uploaded. If the first result lands even slightly over your size, the tool re-encodes it smaller automatically.

How do I compress a video with iMovie?

Apple's free iMovie app can export a smaller copy:

  1. Open iMovie and start a new Movie project with your video.
  2. Tap Done, then the Share button.
  3. Tap Options and choose a lower resolution, such as 720p or 540p.
  4. Tap Save Video.

Going from 4K to 1080p cuts the pixel count by three quarters, so the file shrinks a lot. iMovie can't target a size, though, so check the result before you send it.

How do I compress several videos at once with Shortcuts?

The Shortcuts app has an Encode Media action that re-encodes videos at a size you choose:

  1. Open Shortcuts and tap + to make a new shortcut.
  2. Add Select Photos and turn on Select Multiple.
  3. Add Encode Media and set Size to 1280x720 or 960x540.
  4. Add Save to Photo Album.
  5. Run the shortcut and pick your videos.

Once it's built, compressing a batch of clips takes one tap.

How do I make future iPhone videos smaller?

Change two settings and every new video takes less space:

  1. Go to Settings > Camera > Record Video and choose 1080p at 30 fps.
  2. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and make sure High Efficiency is on.

High Efficiency records in HEVC, which makes files about half the size of the older format. The catch: some Windows and Android players can't open HEVC. Apple explains the trade-off in its guide to HEIF and HEVC media, and our MOV to MP4 converter fixes files that won't play.

Which method should you use?

  • Sending to Discord, Gmail, or a form with a size limit: the browser compressor, because it guarantees the size.
  • Shrinking one clip for your camera roll: iMovie.
  • Shrinking a pile of clips: Shortcuts.
  • Saving storage long term: the camera settings.

If you record app demos, the same rules apply to screen recordings. See how to screen record on iPhone for the recording side.

Quick FAQ

Does iPhone have a built-in video compressor?

No. Photos can trim and crop but can't lower the file size. Use iMovie, Shortcuts, or a browser tool.

How do I make a video smaller to email from iPhone?

Compress it to under 25 MB with the MobileStudio Video Compressor, then attach it. Gmail allows 25 MB of attachments in total.

Does compressing a video on iPhone lower the quality?

A little, because the file holds less data. Dropping to 1080p or 720p is hard to notice on a phone screen.

Will Mail Drop send a big video without compressing?

Yes. Apple Mail offers Mail Drop for large attachments and sends a download link instead of the file.

Can I compress a video on iPhone without an app?

Yes. The browser compressor runs in Safari, so there's nothing to install.
