Instagram's Story editor is built for quick posts. It doesn't give you a proper speed control for videos you upload. The fix is simple: speed the video up first, then post it.
Option 1: Speed it up in iMovie (iPhone, free)
- Open iMovie, start a Movie project, and add your video.
- Tap the clip, tap Speed, and slide toward the hare (up to 2x).
- Done > Share > Save Video.
- Open Instagram, start a Story, and choose the sped-up video from your gallery.
Option 2: Use CapCut (iPhone or Android)
CapCut goes well beyond 2x. Select the clip, tap Speed > Normal, set the speed, and export. CapCut guide.
Option 3: Make it a Reel, then share to your Story
The Reels editor has more editing tools than Stories, including speed for clips on recent versions. Edit it as a Reel, post it, then share the Reel to your Story. Reels speed guide.
Story-specific tips
- Length: Instagram splits long Story videos into segments. Speeding up a video is a good way to keep it in one.
- Vertical: use a 9:16 vertical video so it fills the screen.
- Text: Stories are viewed fast. Keep text on screen long enough to read, even in a sped-up video.
Free tool: Speed Up Video makes any video 0.25× to 4× faster or slower in your browser, with natural-sounding audio and no watermark.
