Instagram's Reels editor can change the speed of your clips without a separate app. Here's how, plus what to do when the option you want isn't there.
Speed up a clip in the Reels editor
- Open Instagram, tap +, and choose Reel.
- Add your video from the gallery or record one.
- Open the editor (tap Edit video or the clip in the timeline).
- Select the clip and tap Speed.
- Pick a faster speed and apply it.
Instagram updates its editor often, so the exact button names and speed options can change. If you don't see Speed, update the app.
Speed up before you record
When recording a Reel in the Instagram camera, look for the speed setting on the left side before you hit record. Setting it to a faster speed records your clip already sped up.
When you need more control
Instagram's editor is quick but limited. For speeding up only part of a clip, speed curves, or speeds beyond what Instagram offers:
- CapCut: precise speed and curves. CapCut guide.
- iMovie: free from Apple, up to 2x with speed ranges. iMovie guide.
Edit there, export, then upload to Instagram.
Keep it watchable
- Speed up the boring parts, not the payoff.
- Add captions. Many people watch Reels muted.
- Keep text on screen long enough to read.
Free tool: Speed Up Video makes any video 0.25× to 4× faster or slower in your browser, with natural-sounding audio and no watermark.
