CapCut is one of the most popular free mobile video editors, and its speed tool goes well past what iMovie offers. Here's how to use it.
Speed up a clip with Normal speed
- Open CapCut and tap New project.
- Select your video and tap Add.
- Tap the clip in the timeline to select it.
- Tap Speed in the bottom toolbar.
- Tap Normal.
- Drag the slider to the speed you want, for example 2x or 5x.
- Tap the checkmark to apply.
Make it ramp smoothly with Curve speed
Curve speed changes speed over the length of the clip, like starting slow, zooming fast, and slowing down again. It's popular for transitions.
- Select the clip and tap Speed > Curve.
- Pick a preset (like Montage or Hero) or choose Custom.
- Tap Edit on the preset to adjust the curve's points.
- Apply.
Keep voices sounding natural
When you speed up a clip, CapCut offers a Pitch option in the speed panel to keep voices from sounding high-pitched. At very high speeds, muting the clip and adding music still sounds better.
Speed up only part of a clip
Split the clip first: move the playhead to where the fast section starts, tap Split, and do the same at the end. Then apply speed to the middle piece only.
Before you export
- Check the export resolution and frame rate in the export screen.
- Check whether your plan adds an ending clip or watermark, and remove it if your account allows.
