MOV vs MP4 comes down to compatibility. Both are containers that hold the same kinds of video (H.264 or HEVC) and audio (AAC). MOV is Apple's QuickTime format and plays best on Apple devices. MP4 is the universal standard that plays almost everywhere. For sharing, use MP4. To switch, the MobileStudio MOV to MP4 converter repackages H.264 files instantly.

What is a video container?
A container is the file wrapper. It holds one or more streams, usually video and audio, plus details like duration and rotation. The codec is how each stream is compressed. MOV and MP4 are containers; H.264 and HEVC are codecs. MP4 was built on the QuickTime design, which is why the two are so similar and why conversion between them can be so fast.
Is MOV better quality than MP4?
No. Quality depends on the codec and bitrate, not the container. The same H.264 video looks identical in a MOV or an MP4. A MOV might seem better if it holds a high-bitrate format like ProRes, but that's the codec talking.
Why does iPhone use MOV?
Apple's own format suits its software, and it supports Apple-specific features like Live Photos and extra metadata. Inside, iPhone records HEVC by default, which is the bigger compatibility issue. Apple's HEVC guide explains when devices convert to a more compatible format.
When should I use MOV, and when MP4?
| Situation | Use |
|---|---|
| Uploading to a website or form | MP4 |
| Sending to Windows or Android users | MP4 (H.264) |
| Editing in Final Cut or iMovie | MOV is fine |
| Archiving iPhone originals | Keep the MOV |
| Posting to social media | MP4 is the safe choice |
How do I convert MOV to MP4?
- Open the MOV to MP4 converter.
- Drop in the MOV.
- H.264 videos convert instantly; for HEVC, choose Most compatible to make H.264.
- Download the MP4.
For other methods, including VLC and HandBrake, see how to convert MOV to MP4. In Terminal, FFmpeg does it with one command.
Is MP4 smaller than MOV?
Not by itself. The container adds almost nothing. Size depends on the codec and bitrate. An HEVC MOV is often smaller than an H.264 MP4 of the same video, because HEVC is more efficient. See HEVC vs H.264 for the numbers, and use the video compressor if you need a smaller file.
Do MOV files play on Windows?
Usually, if they're H.264. iPhone MOVs in HEVC often don't, unless the HEVC extension is installed. VLC plays both. If you're stuck, read why your iPhone video won't play on Windows.
What about M4V files?
M4V is Apple's variant of MP4, used for iTunes video. It's nearly identical to MP4 and most players open it. Renaming isn't needed for playback, but if a site rejects M4V, convert it to MP4 the same way you'd convert a MOV.

Quick FAQ
Which is better, MOV or MP4?
MP4 for sharing, since it plays almost everywhere. MOV is fine for editing on Apple devices.
Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
Not for H.264, which is just repackaged. HEVC to H.264 re-encodes with a small loss.
Is MP4 the same as H.264?
No. MP4 is the container; H.264 is the codec most MP4 files use.
Can YouTube and Instagram take MOV?
Generally yes, but MP4 with H.264 is the most reliable upload format.
Why are some MOV files huge?
They may hold ProRes or high-bitrate 4K. The container isn't the cause.
