In HEVC vs H.264, HEVC (H.265) wins on size and H.264 wins on compatibility. HEVC makes files roughly half the size at the same quality, which is why iPhones record it by default. H.264 plays on almost every phone, computer, browser, and editor. Record and store in HEVC; share in H.264. To convert, the MobileStudio MOV to MP4 converter turns HEVC into H.264 in your browser.
The short answer
| HEVC (H.265) | H.264 (AVC) | |
|---|---|---|
| File size at same quality | About half | Baseline |
| Plays everywhere? | No: older PCs, phones, and some browsers struggle | Yes |
| iPhone setting | High Efficiency | Most Compatible |
| Best for | Recording, storage, Apple devices | Sharing, uploading, editing anywhere |
| HDR support | Yes | Limited |
What is HEVC?
HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also called H.265, is the successor to H.264. It uses smarter compression to describe the same picture with fewer bits. Apple adopted it for iPhone and iPad recording, and explains the format in its guide to HEIF and HEVC media.
What is H.264?
H.264 (Advanced Video Coding, or AVC) is the most widely supported video codec in use. Nearly every device made in the last fifteen years can decode it, often in hardware. It's the default for web video, video calls, and MP4 files.
Is HEVC better quality than H.264?
At the same file size, yes. At the same bitrate, HEVC keeps more detail. If you give H.264 more bitrate, it can look just as good. That's the real trade: HEVC saves space, H.264 saves headaches.
Why won't my HEVC video play?
The device or app has no HEVC decoder. Common cases:
- Windows PCs without the HEVC Video Extensions installed.
- Older Android phones and smart TVs.
- Some web browsers and upload forms.
- Older video editors.
The fix is converting to H.264. See why your iPhone video won't play on Windows for the common case.
How do I convert HEVC to H.264?
- Open the MOV to MP4 converter.
- Drop in the HEVC video.
- Keep Most compatible (H.264) selected.
- Click Convert to MP4 and download.
The file gets larger, because H.264 needs more data. If size matters, run it through the video compressor next. On the command line, FFmpeg can do it with -c:v libx264, and HandBrake has presets for it.
Should I record in HEVC or H.264 on iPhone?
| You mostly... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Keep videos on Apple devices | High Efficiency (HEVC) |
| Send videos to Windows or Android users | Most Compatible (H.264) |
| Are short on storage | High Efficiency |
| Upload to forms and older sites | Most Compatible |
The setting is in Settings > Camera > Formats. Our guide to changing the iPhone video format walks through it.
What about AV1?
AV1 is a newer, royalty-free codec that's even more efficient than HEVC and used by YouTube and Netflix. Device support is growing but not universal, so H.264 is still the safe choice for sharing files. If someone sends you an AV1 or VP9 video that won't open, the same converter turns it into H.264 MP4, just like an HEVC file.

Quick FAQ
Is HEVC the same as H.265?
Yes. HEVC and H.265 are two names for the same codec.
Does HEVC reduce quality?
No. At the same file size it usually looks better than H.264.
Which is better for YouTube, HEVC or H.264?
Both upload fine. H.264 MP4 is the most reliable choice for any upload.
Can I convert HEVC to H.264 without losing quality?
Almost. Re-encoding at high quality makes the difference very hard to see, but the file grows.
Why are my iPhone videos HEVC?
High Efficiency is the default in Settings > Camera > Formats, because it saves storage.
