Zoom works well as a free way to record yourself presenting: your camera, your slides, or both. Here's how.
Step 1: Start a meeting with just you
Open the Zoom desktop app and click New Meeting. No one else needs to join.
Step 2: Set up your view
- Camera on, mic on. Check your framing: eyes about a third of the way down the frame.
- Lighting: face a window or a lamp, not away from it.
- Background: tidy it, or use a virtual background if your computer handles it well.
Step 3: Share your screen (optional)
Click Share Screen and choose your slides or an app window. Zoom's recording will capture the shared screen with your camera.
Step 4: Record
Click Record > Record on this Computer. Present as if someone were watching. Use Pause (Alt + P on Windows, Command + Shift + P on Mac) between sections.
Step 5: End and find the file
Click End Meeting. Zoom converts the recording to an MP4 and opens the folder.
Settings worth changing first
In Settings > Recording:
- Record active speaker, gallery view and shared screen separately (if available on your plan) gives you separate files to edit.
- Optimize for 3rd party video editor improves compatibility if you'll edit afterwards.
Tips for a better self-recording
- Write bullet points, not a script, so you sound natural.
- Look at the camera, not your own video.
- Record in short sections and join them later, rather than one long take.
Where MobileStudio fits
Presenting a mobile app? Instead of sharing your phone screen through Zoom, record the app directly on your phone and polish it in MobileStudio. It looks far sharper. Get MobileStudio.
