Local recording saves a Zoom call straight to your computer. It works on free accounts too. Here's the whole process in the Zoom desktop app.
Before the call: two settings worth changing
In the Zoom desktop app, open Settings > Recording:
- Storage location: choose where recordings go (the default is a Zoom folder in Documents).
- Record a separate audio file for each participant: handy if you'll edit the audio later.
Record the call
- Join or start the meeting in the Zoom desktop app (not the browser).
- Click Record in the meeting controls.
- Choose Record on this Computer if asked.
- A "Recording" indicator appears at the top-left.
Keyboard shortcuts:
- Windows: Alt + R to start or stop, Alt + P to pause or resume.
- Mac: Command + Shift + R to start or stop, Command + Shift + P to pause or resume.
Pause instead of stop
Pausing keeps everything in one file. Stopping and restarting creates separate files.
After the call
When the meeting ends, Zoom converts the recording into an MP4. Don't shut down your computer until it finishes. Then the folder opens with:
- The MP4 video file.
- An M4A audio-only file.
If you don't see the Record button
- You're a participant without permission. Ask the host.
- The host's account has local recording turned off. An admin can enable it.
- You're on the phone app, which can't record locally.
Where MobileStudio fits
If your call is a product demo for a mobile app, record the app on your phone too. MobileStudio turns that recording into a polished demo you can share after the call. Get MobileStudio.
