OBS Studio is a free recorder that can capture Discord's audio from any kind of call: server voice channels, DMs, video calls, and streams. Here's a clean setup.
Install OBS
Download OBS Studio for free from obsproject.com (Windows, Mac, or Linux).
Windows: capture only Discord's sound
- In OBS, under Sources, click +.
- Choose Application Audio Capture.
- Select Discord from the list.
- Add your microphone separately with Audio Input Capture.
Capturing only Discord means system sounds, like notifications or music, stay out of the recording.
Mac: route Discord's sound
macOS doesn't let OBS capture app audio as easily. On recent macOS versions, OBS's macOS Screen Capture source can capture audio from the selected app. On older setups, route Discord through a virtual audio driver like BlackHole, then add it in OBS as an audio input.
Separate tracks (recommended)
In Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, and enable multiple audio tracks for recording. Then in Advanced Audio Properties, assign Discord and your mic to different tracks. You can then fix levels separately when editing.
Record
Set your recording format in Settings > Output (MKV is safest against crashes, and you can remux to MP4 afterwards with File > Remux Recordings). Click Start Recording.
Avoid echo
Use headphones. Otherwise your mic picks up Discord's audio from the speakers, and everyone's voice appears twice.
Consent
OBS doesn't notify anyone. Tell everyone you're recording. More on Discord recording.
