GIF vs MP4: Which Should You Use for Animations?

MP4 is often ten times smaller and far sharper than GIF, but GIFs autoplay in places video can't. Here's how GIF vs MP4 compares and when to use each format.

In GIF vs MP4, MP4 wins on file size and quality, often by ten times, and GIF wins on compatibility in places video doesn't play automatically. Use MP4 wherever video is supported and autoplays. Use GIF for GitHub READMEs, many email clients, and chat tools where a looping image is what's expected. You can make either from the same clip: Video to GIF for GIFs, the video compressor for small MP4s.

Why is GIF so much bigger than MP4?

GIF dates from 1989 and stores each frame as a palette image with up to 256 colors, as the Library of Congress describes in its GIF overview. MP4 video uses modern codecs that store only what changes between frames. A static screen with a moving cursor is nearly free in MP4 but costs a full image per frame in GIF.

When should I use a GIF?

  • GitHub READMEs and docs, where images render but autoplaying video doesn't. See how to add a GIF to a GitHub README.
  • Email, since most email clients show GIFs but block video.
  • Chat reactions and quick loops in Slack or Discord.
  • Product Hunt galleries and places that accept images but not video.

When should I use MP4?

  • Websites and landing pages. A muted, looping MP4 is much lighter than a GIF.
  • Social media. Most platforms convert GIFs to video anyway.
  • Anything longer than about 10 seconds.
  • Anything with gradients, photos, or sound.

How do I convert a video to a GIF?

  1. Open Video to GIF.
  2. Drop in the video and choose up to 10 seconds.
  3. Pick a size limit: 1, 5, or 10 MB.
  4. Click Create GIF.

How do I use an MP4 like a GIF on a website?

Use a video tag with these attributes: autoplay, muted, loop, and playsinline. Browsers allow muted videos to autoplay, so it behaves like a GIF at a fraction of the size. FFmpeg can make a small MP4 from a GIF too, as the FFmpeg documentation shows.

Which format loads faster on a web page?

MP4, by a wide margin. A 3 MB GIF on a landing page can delay everything below it, while the same clip as a 300 KB MP4 barely registers. Search engines also measure page speed, so swapping heavy GIFs for muted looping videos is one of the easiest performance wins on a marketing site. Keep GIFs for the places where they're the only option.

What about WebP and AVIF animations?

Animated WebP and AVIF are image formats with modern compression, much smaller than GIF and supported by current browsers. They're great for websites. GIF remains the safest choice for READMEs, email, and older tools. GitHub's formatting guide covers how images are embedded in READMEs.
