How to Reverse a GIF (Make It Play Backwards)

Make a GIF play backwards: reverse the original video and convert it, or reverse the GIF itself with FFmpeg. Free steps, plus GIFs that play forward and back.

To reverse a GIF, the cleanest route is to reverse the video it came from and convert it again: reverse the clip with Reverse Video, then turn it into a GIF with Video to GIF. If you only have the GIF, FFmpeg can reverse it directly with one command. Both are free.

Why reverse the video instead of the GIF?

GIF stores each frame with at most 256 colors, as the Library of Congress notes in its GIF overview. Converting a GIF to something else and back loses more color each time. Starting from the original video keeps the full quality, and the video tools here only accept video files, not GIFs.

How do I reverse a GIF from the original video?

  1. Open Reverse Video and drop in the original clip (up to 30 seconds).
  2. Click Reverse & export and download the reversed MP4.
  3. Open Video to GIF and drop in that MP4.
  4. Set the start, length, and a size limit (1, 5, or 10 MB).
  5. Click Create GIF.

Both steps run in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

How do I reverse a GIF file with FFmpeg?

ffmpeg -i in.gif -vf reverse out.gif

For better colors, add a palette step:

ffmpeg -i in.gif -vf "reverse,split[a][b];[a]palettegen[p];[b][p]paletteuse" out.gif

The FFmpeg documentation covers the reverse, palettegen, and paletteuse filters. Keep GIFs short, since reverse holds every frame in memory.

How do I make a GIF that plays forward then backward?

That's a boomerang GIF:

  1. Make a boomerang video: the original clip followed by its reversed copy. See how to make a boomerang video.
  2. Convert the result with Video to GIF.

GIFs loop forever, so one forward-and-back pass is enough. With FFmpeg, you can build it from a GIF directly: ffmpeg -i in.gif -filter_complex "[0]split[a][b];[b]reverse[r];[a][r]concat=n=2:v=1" out.gif.

Can I reverse a GIF on my phone?

On Samsung, the Gallery's GIF maker offers Reverse and Swing styles for some clips, as Samsung's GIF guide shows. On iPhone and other Android phones, reverse the original video in the browser, then convert it, both in Safari or Chrome. For making GIFs on each device, see how to make a GIF from a video.

Where are reversed GIFs useful?

Reversed GIFs make neat loading animations, "undo" demos in product docs, and reaction GIFs with a twist. In a README or help article, a short forward-and-back GIF of a UI interaction often explains a feature better than two screenshots, because readers see both states without clicking anything.

Will a reversed GIF be bigger?

No. It has the same frames in the opposite order, so the size is about the same. A boomerang GIF has twice the frames and roughly twice the size; to shrink it, see how to make a GIF smaller.
