To flip a video, mirror it horizontally (left becomes right) or vertically (top becomes bottom). Horizontal flips are the common one: they fix backwards text in selfie videos and make a subject face the other way. The MobileStudio Rotate & Flip Video tool flips horizontally in any browser, and iPhone Photos, Google Photos alternatives, QuickTime, and Clipchamp all have flip options too.
The short answer
| You're on | How to flip horizontally |
|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | Photos > Edit > Crop > flip button |
| Mac | QuickTime > Edit > Flip Horizontal |
| Windows | Clipchamp > clip menu > Flip horizontal |
| Any browser | Rotate & Flip Video > Flip |
| Command line | FFmpeg with the hflip filter |
What's the difference between flipping and rotating?
Rotating turns the picture around its center, like turning a photo on a table. Flipping mirrors it, like holding it up to a mirror. A video rotated 180 degrees looks upside down but text still reads correctly backwards-to-forwards; a video flipped vertically looks upside down and mirrored. If your video is just sideways, see how to rotate a video instead.
When should I flip a video horizontally?
- Selfie videos with backwards text. Signs and shirts read the wrong way when the front camera mirrors the image.
- Matching a direction. Making two clips of people facing each other line up.
- Composition. Moving a subject from the left side to the right without re-shooting.
Avoid flipping videos with readable text you want people to see, logos, or anything where left and right matter, like a guitarist's hands.
How do I flip a video in my browser?
- Open Rotate & Flip Video.
- Drop in the video.
- Click Flip horizontally. The preview mirrors instantly.
- Rotate it too, if needed, with Left 90° or Right 90°.
- Click Export MP4.
The flip is part of the exported picture, so it shows the same way in every player. The audio is kept, and nothing is uploaded.
How do I flip a video on iPhone?
Open the video in Photos, tap Edit, then Crop, and tap the flip button (two triangles) in the top corner. Tap Done. Apple's crop, rotate, and flip guide shows where it is. To stop new selfie videos coming out mirrored, see how to unmirror a front camera video.
How do I flip a video on Mac?
In QuickTime Player, choose Edit > Flip Horizontal or Edit > Flip Vertical, then save. Apple's QuickTime guide covers flipping single clips too. More in how to rotate a video on Mac.
How do I flip a video on Windows?
In Clipchamp, select the clip, open the three-dot menu in the floating toolbar, hover over Flip, and choose Flip horizontal or Flip vertical. Microsoft documents it in How to flip videos. Then export.
How do I flip a video on Android?
Google Photos' editor rotates but doesn't always offer a flip. Use the browser tool in Chrome, which flips on any phone, or Samsung's video editor if your Galaxy shows a flip option.
Will flipping change the audio?
No. Flipping only mirrors the picture, so voices and music stay exactly as they were. Stereo audio isn't swapped left to right either. If you need the sound to match a mirrored scene, for example a musician panned to one side, adjust the stereo balance separately in an audio editor.
How do I flip a video with FFmpeg?
ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -vf hflip -c:a copy out.mp4 flips horizontally; vflip flips vertically. Combine with rotation using -vf "hflip,transpose=1". The FFmpeg documentation lists the filters.
