How to Rotate a Video (Free, on Any Device)

Rotate a video 90 or 180 degrees for free on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, or in a browser, and save it so it plays the right way up in every app.

To rotate a video, turn it in 90-degree steps until it's the right way up, then save it. Every device can do this for free: Photos on iPhone, Google Photos on Android, QuickTime on Mac, and Clipchamp on Windows. The MobileStudio Rotate & Flip Video tool works in any browser and bakes the rotation into the video itself, so it plays correctly everywhere, not just on your phone.

Why do videos come out sideways?

Phones record the sensor image the same way every time and add a small orientation note to the file. If the phone guessed the orientation wrong, or an app ignores that note, the video plays sideways or upside down. Rotating fixes the guess. Baking the rotation into the pixels, which the browser tool does, means it can't be ignored again. More in how to fix a sideways video.

How do I rotate a video in my browser?

  1. Open Rotate & Flip Video.
  2. Drop in the video.
  3. Click Left 90° or Right 90° until the preview is upright. Click twice for 180°.
  4. Click Flip if the video is also mirrored.
  5. Click Export MP4.

The result is an H.264 MP4 with the original sound, and nothing is uploaded.

How do I rotate a video on iPhone?

Open the video in Photos, tap Edit, then Crop, and tap the rotate button (a square with an arrow) until it's upright. Tap Done. Apple's crop, rotate, and flip guide shows the buttons. Full steps: how to rotate a video on iPhone.

How do I rotate a video on Android?

In Google Photos, tap Edit > Crop, then Rotate until it's upright, and tap Save copy. Google's editing help covers it. See how to rotate a video on Android.

How do I rotate a video on a computer?

Should I rotate or crop to make a video vertical?

Rotate only when the picture is on its side. If the video is upright but landscape and you want it vertical for TikTok or Reels, crop it to 9:16 instead with the crop tool. See how to make a video vertical.

How do I avoid sideways videos in the future?

Whatever the device, the fix is the same: hold it in the final orientation before you press record, and keep auto-rotate or rotation lock settings in mind. Phones decide orientation at the moment recording starts, so a phone lying flat or tilted at that instant is the usual culprit.

Does rotating a video reduce quality?

Rotating in 90-degree steps doesn't lose detail by itself. Apps that only change the orientation note don't re-encode at all. The browser tool re-encodes at high quality so the rotation is permanent, and the difference is very hard to see.
